The packaging on most reed diffusers says 3 months. Sometimes 2–3 months. Occasionally a bold claim of up to 6. The honest answer is that lifespan depends on several factors that most brands don't explain — and understanding them means you get far more value out of every bottle.

What actually determines lifespan.

A reed diffuser lasts as long as the oil in the bottle. How quickly that oil depletes comes down to four things:

The 150ml baseline.

A standard 150ml bottle — which is what Bushborn diffusers include — will typically last between 3 and 4 months under normal Australian conditions with 5 reeds. In a cooler, less ventilated room you might get closer to 5 months. In a warm, well-ventilated room, closer to 2.5.

Tip: If you want to extend the life of your diffuser, remove 2–3 reeds. You'll get a softer scent but it will last noticeably longer. Add reeds back when you want a stronger throw.

When to flip the reeds.

Flipping the reeds — turning them upside down so the dry end goes into the oil — gives a temporary burst of stronger fragrance. This is useful when you want a stronger scent for a specific occasion, but do it too often and you'll shorten the overall life of the bottle. Once a week is plenty. Once a fortnight is better if longevity is the priority.

You'll know it's time to flip when the scent becomes barely noticeable and the reeds look dry along their full length.

When to replace the reeds.

Over time, the pores in rattan reeds become clogged with dust and dried oil residue. When this happens, the reeds stop drawing oil effectively — you'll notice the scent diminishing even though there's still oil in the bottle.

As a rule of thumb, replace your reeds when you refill your oil. New reeds with fresh oil will perform significantly better than old reeds with new oil.

Premium rattan reeds — like the 6mm reeds included with Bushborn diffusers — have larger pores and last longer before clogging compared to cheaper thin reeds. The reed quality matters more than most people realise.

The refill advantage.

Most reed diffusers get thrown away when the oil runs out — base, reeds, everything. This is unnecessary and expensive. A quality timber or ceramic base can be refilled indefinitely. The base is the design object. The oil is the consumable.

Bushborn diffusers are designed from the start to be refilled. The timber base lasts indefinitely. A 150ml refill bottle costs $20 — significantly less than replacing the whole diffuser. Over time, the economics of refilling are substantially better than replacing.

The short answer.

A 150ml reed diffuser will last 3–4 months under typical Australian conditions. You can extend this by using fewer reeds and keeping it away from heat and direct airflow. Replace the reeds when you refill. Buy a base worth keeping — the oil is the only thing you should ever have to replace.
